Evidence-Based Nursing:
Labor Support Skills Workshop

Evidence-Based Nursing Care: Labor Support Skills

A one-day workshop designed for nurse managers, midwives, staff nurses, doctors, doulas, and other health care providers who care for women.  While geared towards those professionals working in the hospital setting, this workshop will benefit all birth professionals working with birthing families.

The goal of the workshop is to help birth professionals examine the evidence for labor support, develop and/or refresh labor support skills, and promote best practices for safe, satisfying, and healthy birth.

Hospitals can help achieve the Joint Commission goal of reducing preventable maternal deaths while also making progress toward Joint Commission core measures by training staff in the critical practices for a safe and healthy birth.

Potential benefits include increased expertise in labor support skills and increased job satisfaction. Additional potential benefits are increased patient/client satisfaction, improved maternal/child well-being and reduced incidence of adverse outcomes including cesarean sections.

Upon completion of the program, participants will have:

  • Increased confidence that the supportive care they provide during labor and birth is evidence-based.

  • Increased expertise and skills in providing labor support.

  • Increased knowledge of Joint Commission Perinatal Care Core Measures relating to elective delivery, Cesarean birth, and exclusive breastmilk feeding.

  • Increased consumer satisfaction
