I founded Mum’s the Word in January 2001.
Little did I realize how much supporting women and families would change my own life. I have attended 300+ births thus far, each one vastly different from the previous one, and each one a learning experience for me.
My vision–to provide prenatal, birth, postpartum and breastfeeding support for mothers and families in my hometown of Monterey, California—was driven by my desire for expectant parents to have a solid foundation on which to build their families. The strength of this desire has since led me to expand my vision to include families outside of Monterey so that my information, resources, and support are made available to all those who seek it.
Throughout my life, I have had a wide range of interests that traverse many spectrums. Though I graduated from Sacramento State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and had a career as a Managing Editor at a well-known publishing company, I became interested in pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding while pregnant with my first child.
Inspired by my own experience as an expectant mother, I immersed myself in study, determined to learn all I could about the changes that were occurring within me so as to fully prepare myself for motherhood and all of its resulting joys and challenges. In June of 2000, barely a year after the birth of my daughter, I—seeking to further cultivate my knowledge—became involved with a local doula organization, Doulas of Monterey County. Motivated by my growing passion for the field, I undertook DONA International’s doula training and started my business as a Birth and Postpartum Doula in January 2001—all while continuing my full-time work in the publishing field.
Nearly a year later, in December 2001, I was laid off from my publishing job. I decided to capitalize on the loss of my job by pursuing my birthing interests full-time. It was then that I was able to take massage therapy classes, becoming a Certified Massage Therapist, and attend a breastfeeding counseling training course to further expand my knowledge of touch and healing and enhance my ability to serve expectant mothers.
In January 2016, I joined the Board of Directors for Lamaze International.
In January 2016, I started an Associates Degree Midwifery Program with Midwives College of Utah. I finished my academic work in January 2019 and am currently working in my Primary phase of my apprenticeship with a Certified Nurse Midwife.
I believe that education and information is the best way to make informed decisions. I strive to educate and support all families of the peninsula, regardless of financial ability, status in the community, or how you choose to deliver your baby. I do my best to provide you with an educated journey from the beginning of your pregnancy through childbirth, breastfeeding, and beyond.
It is through discovering my niche, my passion, and my joy that I am able to realize my purpose: to educate expectant parents by providing them with all of the necessary information and resources so that they can make informed decisions about what is right for their families, no matter their status or financial ability.
